Valerie Earnshaw provided a brief overview of the June 2017 workshop that FIC hosted along with several NIH ICs including NIMH. The workshop “The Science of Stigma Reduction: New Directions for Research to Improve Health” convened U.S. and low- and middle-income country (LMIC) researchers focused on reducing health-related stigma across disease areas (e.g., mental illness, HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and cancer), populations, and settings. As an outcome of this meeting, participant teams developed nine publications that further examined the major themes in stigma research and global health. To build upon the momentum and enthusiasm that the stigma workshop and subsequent publications generated for this cross-cutting research agenda both within the NIH and among the broader research community, FIC and NIMH hosted a Stigma Collection Launch Meeting webinar. Select authors of the Collection presented the major findings from their articles and participated in a discussion with attendees about potential next steps for this project. Presenters highlighted mental health issues and utilized mental health-related examples where appropriate.
